Gynecology

Gynecology diagnoses and treats diseases of the reproductive organs including cancer of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina and fallopian tubes. A gynecologist also treats prolapse of the pelvic organs. This is a condition usually present in postmenopausal women with weakened pelvic muscles that cannot support the uterus or bladder properly.

This including obstetrics, or pregnancy and childbirth, menstruation and fertility issues, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), hormone disorders, and others.

Gynecology encompasses specific surgical procedures related to female reproductive organs. The most common procedures are:

  • Tubal ligation – a permanent form of birth control
  • Hysterectomy- removal of the uterus
  • Oophorectomy – removal of the ovaries
  • Salpingectomy – removal of the fallopian tubes
  • Cone biopsy -remove precancerous cells in the cervix identified during a pap test
  • Asthma.
  • Psychiatric conditions such as depression and personality disorders.
  • Cardiovascular disease.
  • Diabetes.
  • Thyroid disorders and other hormonal issues.
  • Domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Osteoporosis.
  • Issues relating to pregnancy, fertility, menstruation, and menopause
  • Family planning, including contraception, sterilization, and pregnancy termination
  • Problems with tissues that support the pelvic organs, including ligaments and muscles
  • STIs, Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Urinary and fecal incontinence
  • Cancers of the reproductive tract and the breasts, and pregnancy-related tumors
  • Emergency care relating to gynecology
  • Congenital abnormalities of the female reproductive tract
  • Sexuality, including health issues relating to same-sex and bisexual relationships
  • Endometriosis, a chronic condition that affects the reproductive system , pelvic inflammatory diseases, including abscesses
